I was a total geek in high school. Didn’t have the glasses and suspenders but I may as well have. Made some bad decisions, some twist and turns and some ups and down in university and ended up here!
A 23 year-old Social Media Specialist with intense passion for my work. The Bachelors in Business Administration degree with a major in Marketing should be the reason I can do what I do but unfortunately, it’s not. What I learned in school in no match to what hours upon hours of browsing the net has taught me. (Seriously, it’s like my day and night job. I should be certified.) Now I spend my days helping the brand that I love communicate with the people I feel connected to – and I get paid for it!
I’m also in the middle of an emotional growth spurt so I’m learning and implementing new things into my routine everyday – how to respect people, live a more fulfilling life and yadiyadiyadda. The good stuff.
But for the people who don’t want the feel good version of me, here’s the humdrum timeline of my adult years thus far.
2005 Graduated Ardenne High School with 8 CXCs
2006 Went to Montego Bay Community College to do a UTech (University of Technology, Jamaica) course because UTech didn’t think I was old enough to come on their regular campus (true story, by the way)
2008 Transferred to UTech for the final two years of my degree. Got this plaque thingy that says ‘Most Outstanding Student at a Community College’.
2010 Finished up my degree at UTech – with honours yay! Got a few awards in the process (Best Committee Member for Entertainment Committee and PR/Editorial Committee) cuz I worked myself to a tizzy with a few asthma episodes and panic attacks along the way (now would I joke about something like that?). Oh yeah, I found my shining star in final year in a little
deathtrap course called Marketing Seminar. Formally, I was the Corresponding Secretary. Informally, I was the secretary, writer, designer, event planner, marketer, sponsorship seeker, and a host of other things it would take too long to name.
A month after leaving school, two crazy baldheads at this company named Oceanic Digital Jamaica, which some people probably know as Claro gave me this super fantastic job. I got to pick events that I thought were great and collaborate as a sponsor – can you believe they call that work? Travelling around the country, planning events and adding value to others through sponsorship, meeting and working with great people – extremely difficult stuff.
2011 After a year at Claro, it was time to stop working for the man and start sleeping in, taking frequent vacations and live on FB and Twitter while calling it work – was about to do a strikethrough then I realized it’s the truth. I have taken the main aspects I love about marketing and made it into my career. Let’s see where the journey takes me!
2012 Entrepreneurial pursuits! This was the year of stepping out on my own. I got into freelancing and offered services in social media marketing to small businesses and events in Jamaica. It led to a whole bunch of first-time experiences – Jamaica Jazz & Blues (seeing Celine Dion perform – eeek!), Reggae Sumfest (seeing Shabba perform – eeek!), starting the #SMMLchat among other things. Fabulous year which led to…
2013 Vistaprint hired me as a Social Media Specialist! So far it’s been an absolutely fabulous journey and who knows what else is in store…
